Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken approximately 8km along the 18km Coomera circuit in the Binna Burra section of Lamington National Park, Queensland Australia. The National Park is home to some spectacular walks hidden in dense rain forests with many creeks and awesome waterfalls. It attracts a lot of tourists and locals especially from Queensland's iconic Gold Coast. Being only an hours drive from Surfers Paradise it is a well known "to do" on lots of peoples lists. I have completed this trek at least 4 times and each time I have discovered many new things to photograph and explore..

Time

I started this circuit with my brother at 6am it was wet, muddy and raining most of the day. We made good time to the first creek crossing and waterfall where we stopped to set up for some photos, upon leaving it was about 8:20am between that point and 2pm we covered 11km and still had 7km ahead of us. Each creek crossing slowed us down as some parts were deep and fast flowing due to the constant rain. The photography side of things was equally as slow due to constantly wiping the rain off the lens on each shot. I remember finally getting back to the car around 7pm..not bad for 13 hours in a wet rain forest.. this photo was taken at 10:34am

Lighting

The lighting in this photo is all natural, it was a rainy day, very cloudy and overcast. It was great for these dark and soft light shots.

Equipment

Nikon D90 with my Nikon 55-200 lens both were covered in plastic with my rain shield over the top, mounted on a manfrotto tripod.. I had my Nikon D800e at the time but wasn't prepared to get it drenched. My pack was the only dry place I could do lens changes

Inspiration

I think Binna Burra is a magical place..The inspiration behind this photo would be "even in death..life is created in the rain forest world"

Editing

I believe I slightly lightened this photo in Adobe Lightroom

In my camera bag

I usually pack to suit the location and style of the photography i'm after.. Apart from camera and lenses I always pack the following regardless. Empty memory cards, fully charged battery's, high quality lens wipes, remote shutter release and I always make sure I have my tripod mounting bracket either on the camera or tripod. My pack is waterproof but I always have some large ziplock bags in case it gets really wet.. Walks like this I might through in a personal first aid kit, I always have a torch, some dry food, Sharp knife and always enough water to last the trek..

Feedback

Get out there! don't be afraid to get dirty, wet or out after dark! I like going out to these places when the weather conditions are bad or not ideal, because it opens up scenes that are only available at that time.. During the rain the forest comes alive with creatures that would otherwise be hidden away like frogs and giant snails.. Bush walking or hiking in the rain is probably something most people would try to avoid, It can be dangerous in regards to flash flooding and strong currents in creeks and near waterfalls. But the people brave or crazy enough to do it are going to land photos only seen during these occurrences. Some of the best rain forest photos I have seen have been captured during rain..
