I am essentially a self taught photographer of 3 years that takes any opportunity I can to practice. Through a series of online classes on various sites and in person workshops, the one mantra each instructor stressed was practice practice practice! This "practice" photo was inspired by an online tip about controlling ambient light with shutter speed. I put this tip to practice at work during a break. We shot this in our warehouse.Time
It was a cool fall evening so we let the bay door open for some fresh air. The only ambient light was fluorescent, about 20 feet high, and was only used for focusing.Lighting
I shot a few frames to darken the ambient completely. I purchased 2 Streaklight 360s and I set up one with a bare build aimed vertically and no reflector. It was 2 feet away from the subject and slightly to his left side. I a rim/silhouette type of look to essentially capture just the front o his face.Equipment
I used my Nikon D7100 with a Nikkor 50mm set at f20 and 1/250 and a Streaklight 360 with a bare bulb. This shot took maybe 15 minutes to capture.Inspiration
My subject is a throwback guy and loves music and movies from the 60s and 70s. He is the epitome of cool and reminds me of those old jazz album covers. I also love the imagery and art work from the 60s and 70s music and movies, especially Jazz club scenes. I wanted a Miles Davis Birth Of Cool type of photo.Editing
The editing was a combination of Lightroom and Photoshop, starting and ending in Lightroom. Basic Lightroom adjustments were used for cropping, basic exposure settings, sharpening and masking. Lightroom adjustment brushes were used for slight enhancements on the cigarette and the smoke, some shadows, and his eyes. Photoshop was used to enhance the lighting on his face and hand.In my camera bag
My backpack has my Nikon D7100 body with 3 lenses: Nikkor 50MM f1.8, Nikkor 85mm, and a Nikon 35mm. Of course i have backup batteries and cleaning products. On camera flash is a yongnuo.Feedback
Have a vision of what want the end result to achieve, know your equipment, and practice practice practice. Don't settle for the 1st good shot and be willing to make minor adjusts on the fly. Lastly, dont be timid in directing your subject. Just make sure your subject feels relaxed.
