Behind The Lens

Location

Browsing through my posts an advert for a studio day featuring two models whose work I had admired for a few years popped up... I had always avoided shooting with them as the images I had seen were stunning, "Should I or shouldn't I??".. Lack of confidence in my own ability was the easy way of avoiding another shoot with the stunningly natural beauties Carla & Ivy... I thought why not go for it.... Sandon Studios in Staffordshire was the venue and I had a hour booked with both models... As I entered the venue and greeted by the friendly owner for the tour I spotted the stairway with a massive window bathed in diffused light, that was my first location choice taken care of for both models... It didn't disappoint

Time

This was taken in the morning at 11:00am which had a massive impact on diffusing the light in the window...

Lighting

The lightning was a major factor in choosing the location to shoot as this was all natural diffused light from a very large window.... I had brought several bits of lighting paraphernalia with me but this could not match the natural light I was seeing …. This also helped to reduced set up time and allowed me to concentrate on grabbing the shot rather than setting up strobes & studio lights with my limited time... Using the near wall to create a channel of light to Carla's side helped to evenly light her as the light from the large window wrapped around her and allowed me to control the exposure without losing detail on the shadow side....

Equipment

Nikon DF & 50mm F1.4g ….. Handheld

Inspiration

I spent 2 years studying portraiture as a personal challenge to see how I could progress and more importantly improve, plus raise my own confidence in dealing with people... The Model turned her back to me whilst being straight on to the window... I asked her to repose whilst moving to the wall to incorporate the near wall into the shot and create a channel.

Editing

The image was shot Raw with a neutral colour with slight sharpening & neutral contrast in camera settings... imported into NX2 software were I adjust contrast & exposure before outputting as a JPG.. This is then imported into Photoshop CS and converted to black and white using a number of non destructive techniques... I used an analogue overlay to add textures then convert the B&W image in Nik Software's Silver Efex pro to add grain and also a uniform finish.... As I have found this is always my last global setting as it can destroy an image if used early in the process.

In my camera bag

Nikon D600 & Fuji XPro-1 a 28mm F2.8 & 50mm F1.4g Nikkor Lenses... spare batteries, memory cards along with cleaning clothes.

Feedback

When you are learning you are reluctant to spend large amounts of money for decent models and rely on family, friends and volunteer models... No disrespect intended but the extra money spent on a subsequently trained and qualified models is money well spent and avoids the wooden poses of the family and friends (no disrespect meant but people who know you wont relax and you end up training them to pose correctly adding time to your shoot).... I wish I had done this sooner rather than later... The professional models flow from pose to pose at the click of a button and you will end up with 30+ images that will fit seamlessly into your portfolio straight out of the camera... Look for the minimum light that you require to light the model and get to work shooting... Complex lighting takes time so natural light shoots can be a blessing if the light is available...
