Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a field at Moses H Cone Memorial Park on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Blowing Rock, NC.

Time

Around 10AM, in temps around 10-15º with very little wind.

Lighting

Shooting mid morning allowed the tree to be partially illuminated. This also allowed the shadows to be drawn out across the ground creating the painted dark areas on the foreground.

Equipment

This was shot on my Sony A5000 with a 16-50mm lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

I had seen this tree before, but it was not the original intent of my journeys that morning. I wound up at Moses Cone because my original goal, the Linn Cove Viaduct covered in rime ice, was not in good shape. When I saw this tree it automatically struck me as being one of the most beautiful things I had ever laid eyes on. It stands by itself in a field and seemed resilient to the 1/2" thick ice on it's limbs. Just perfection incarnate.

Editing

I used Lightroom to do a bit of the processing bumping up contrast and darkening some of the whites (sunlight on snow is BRIGHT!). I try to keep my post processing to a minimum when I can, and this time just happened to work out pretty well.

In my camera bag

I generally only take my Sony A5000 out with my 18-55mm f/3.2 lens. It gets me around for most of the shots I want to take.

Feedback

Just get out and shoot. I live and shoot by the motto that photography is 95% being there. You can't get the shot if you aren't there. 10º out? Who cares, go for a hike! You won't regret it!
