Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Alviso, which is this strange place lost in time just north of Santa Clara, CA. It's almost hard to believe that this spot is in the San Francisco Bay Area. I was in the marine reserve when I took this photo.

Time

I believe I took this photo around 4PM. It was a rare cloudy day towards the end of Summer here in the Bay Area, which made for idea conditions to take photos.

Lighting

The lighting was all natural, and having the cloud cover was ideal only casting minimal shadows. I felt like it was easier to control than having hard light only to work with.

Equipment

On this day, I used my Canon 6D and a Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM lens with no flash.

Inspiration

Honestly, the whole idea to go out and shoot in Alviso was a bit of right place, right time. I was getting off of work around 3PM that day and a couple of co-workers of mine had come in on there way to go shoot in Alviso. I just happen to have my camera with me and asked if I could tag along. I guess it paid off, Alviso turned out to be a gem of a place to photograph.

Editing

I did do some post with this photo. First it's black and white, and I only shoot in RAW, and I prefer to edit to B&W. I wanted to really make this photo dramatic and moody, so I adjusted up the clarity to bring out the fineness of the textures as well as the clouds and blades of grass. I really wanted the focus to be on the bush, so I played with vignetting and brushes to draw your eyes to the center of the photo.

In my camera bag

I typically have my canon 6D and canon 7D along with a canon L 24-105 f/4, Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM lens, Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 APO EX DG HSM OS FLD Large Aperture Telephoto Zoom Lens, Canon Speedlite 430EX II Flash and most recently I added a mirrorless Sony a6300 with a 16-50mm lens.

Feedback

My advice is to take your time and slow down in your environment, you never know what you are going to find. Also, if it catches your eye, capture it.
