Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my yard no more than 20 feet from my front door. After two days of rain, there were many mushroom caps popping up that day. The one's in the image were situated at the base of a palm tree and, therefore, were mostly in the shade. It was mid-morning when the photo was taken. So, there were a couple of shafts of sunlight hitting the mushroom caps. It was this contrast in lighting that caught my attention.

Time

It was mid-morning when the photo was taken between 9 and 10 AM, I believe. The Florida sun was as bright as usual. But, the mushrooms in the photo were mostly in the shade. I would guess that the mushroom caps had been above ground perhaps 4 - 5 hours.

Lighting

The lighting was a mixture of both direct sunlight and shadow. If the mushrooms had been completely exposed to the Florida sun, I'm sure they would have terminally wilted by the time I saw them.

Equipment

The camera was my modestly priced Panasonic Lumix with a equally, modestly priced macro lens attached. The camera was hand-held at ground level.

Inspiration

I am often attracted to subjects situated in high-contrast lighting. Certainly, this was the case in this instance where there was a combination of direct sunlight and shade.

Editing

The photo was enhanced by increasing the contrast between the mushroom caps and their background and cropping. The sharpness and clarity of the image were also boosted.

In my camera bag

I am strictly an amateur. In most cases, the only photo equipment I have on my person is the camera itself.

Feedback

When I look at the photos posted on Viewbug, it strikes me that many of my fellow amateurs do not employ any post-shutter, image processing software. I can only speculate that this is due to a mistaken impression that such software is expensive. It can be, of course. However, one can do a lot with many of the free photo apps available. My own image certainly benefited from the use of one of these said apps.
