Location
This was a photo taken at the 2016 Plains Indian Museum powwow in Cody, WY. This event is a sponsored museum event by the Buffalo Bill Center of the West annually every Father's Day weekend.Time
Photo was take at about 12:15 p.m. during the grand entry of over 100 contestants.Lighting
This is some of the most dynamic lighting here at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West's powwow gardens. Powwow arenas are set up in a circle and usually open to the full sun and light with no cover or obstruction. It helps to enhance the colors and movement of the regalia each dancer wears.Equipment
I used my DSLR Canon 80D and my Canon 70-200mm lens w/stabilization and lens hood.Inspiration
I am the contracted photographer these last several years for the powwow. My objective is to capture movement, meaning, stories, and portraits of the Native American culture represented at this cultural event. The inspiration came from this young woman's resolve and stoic profile. She is portrait-esc with those of past generations that hold fast for a portrait with no emotion when photographers were capturing native culture.Editing
I use Adobe Photoshop CC for all my photo editing. This photo here I used an action bundle that is preset as "Clean Color". This is a put together action set of about 20 steps that helps to bring sharp clarity to the color captured. In my camera bag
I usually have 2 DSLR cameras. Always have a backup! The list is as follows. Canon 80D Canon 70D 25mm Canon fixed lens 18-125mm Canon lens 50-300mm Canon lens 70-200mm Canon lens 150-600mm Sigma lens Tripod at hand just in case. Simple UV filter for a 65mm mount.Feedback
You have to remember there is lots of movement and you have to be creative in how you position yourself. Do NOT get lost in all the activity. At a cultural event such like a powwow it is hard to focus. You have to "fall in love" with something. Beads, a persons paint, feathers, fringe, bells, movement. These are all happening simultaneously for hours. The amazing thing about the digital age is shoot fast and shoot often. You have the SD card space to capture so much. Take 5 minutes and fix on a subject. Do NOT panic if you are missing something else. Choose your muse. Fixate on that muse and take over 100 shots of them. I usually each year pick 3 subjects that captivate me. I will spend 10 minutes exclusively on them unlike any other facet at powwow. This young woman I took well over 100 frames of before I captured her in this single frame.
