Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the rooftop of my building in the Bronx. It was gloomy and rainy that day.

Time

This was early morning. We had setup on the roof and wanted to get some images before the rain started to fall.

Lighting

I love cloudy days, it. To me it lights up an image perfectly. Not to strong of a sunlight and not to dark. Just perfect. We picked a corner of the roof where the light was coming from above down to the model.

Equipment

My favorite camera, Nikon d750 with 50mm lens at 1.8. No tripod or flash.

Inspiration

I wanted vulnerability and mystery. Shying away from the camera semi nude gave me an illusion of hurt and suffering. But the light showed me there’s an out to this dark sadness. Hope.

Editing

I used Lightroom to eliminate unwanted spots and skin darkness. I raised the exposure to a 5 for more light on the shadow parts of the model. And I soften the skin a bit. About a 11.

In my camera bag

Just my camera, Nikon d750 and 3 lens. 50mm, 18-35mm and a 70-300mm. I love using natural light so I barely carry a flash.

Feedback

I go with my gut and what feels right in my viewfinder. I’ve grown up watching so many movies and tv shows and looking at magazine, that the framing and composition just comes natural to my eye. An offset and I’ll know my positioning is not right. Sometimes, I’ll just rapid shoot my subject from different angles and you’ll be surprise how many good images come out from various of angles and position. From there I just choose the best during post.
