Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at a winery in rural Missouri, Casa de Loco Winery. The building is over 100 years old and this is one of the few original windows remaining. The name Casa de Loco is in reference to what the buildings were built for. It was a complex for women who were clinically insane. Which I find strange because it was built on the edge of a cliff overlooking a river. The part of the building where this window is at used to be where the water tank stood. I was inside the building.

Time

I took this picture in the early afternoon, probably around 2pm. They were closed but the owner let my friend and I come look around the entire facility as a wedding venue. They host several weddings because it is such a beautiful place. Unfortunately for us, it is too small.

Lighting

I was inside the building and to my left were a couple large windows that let in a lot of natural light at that time of day. The owner, Larry, was making moonshine in the next room but he forgot to open the back door to let the moisture out, so the air was thick with a haze similar to early morning fog. The haze had reached the windows to my left but hadn't reached this window yet. I loved the way the natural light was filtered by the fog. No interior lights were on, we didn't need to turn any on to see the space.

Equipment

I wasn't planning on taking pictures of anything that day so I didn't have my camera with me. I only had my iPhone 6+ on me and that is what I took this photo with.

Inspiration

It spoke to me. The architecture of the windowsill, the color of the paint of the glass, the hole in the wall, the way the light shone through the room, all together with the stains of time were just too beautiful not to capture.

Editing

There was no need for any post-processing. I took the time to capture it exactly as I saw it in that moment. To me, it was perfect.

In my camera bag

I always have my phone with me and I end up taking a lot of pictures with it. I do have a Nikon D5100, no extra lenses or filters. I'm as amateur as it gets. I would love to have more lenses to capture more things. I feel limited with what little I do have. I enjoy taking photos of the most random things.

Feedback

My advice is to pay attention to the things and people around you. If you do that, then you will see the beauty in the world that others miss. Larry was going to take the paint off the window, but after seeing this picture he decided he would leave it. He said he never looked at it like that before. Take the shot in the moment when you see the beauty, even if it is with your phone. Sure, I could always go back with my Nikon to take another shot, but it won't be in the exact same light.
