This photo was taken on a Kansas City Library rooftop. I noticed these circular shadows an umbrella made and held a spontaneous photoshoot with my sister as my model.Time
It's funny because normally the best shots are taken in the morning or late afternoon. This spontaneous photo was taken right in the middle of the hottest part of the day in the middle of the summer.Lighting
My sister and I were studying on this rooftop and I noticed the shadows this umbrella made and knew I had to take advantage of the unique lighting. I had my sister stand on a table to get the perfect angle of the pattern on her face.Equipment
This was a shot taken by a Nikon D300. No flash or other equipment was used.Inspiration
I have always been drawn to people and pattern photos and when this situation presented itself, I knew I couldn't pass it up. I also have been inspired by Ansel Adams and his black and white photography for ages and decided to combine the simplicity of the black and white with the dramatic patterns.Editing
Besides using the black and white version of this photo, I felt like no post-processing was necessary and decided to leave it in its naturally beautiful form.In my camera bag
I always carry the bare neccesities with me everywhere I go just in case a spontaneous photoshoot presents itself. That includes having my Nikon D3300 with its 18-55mm lens, my 55-200mm lens, and battery packs. I'll also bring my tripod and reflectors along in my car if needed.Feedback
Going to this city rooftop on that day, I had no intention of capturing this photograph, which is now one of my favorites of all time. My advice would be to always be prepared and never hold back. If an opportunity presents oneself, take it no matter what it takes or who is watching. I probably looked very strange having my sister stand on a table for a photoshoot at a library, but the result was worth it. So go and live life, but don't forget to stop and capture great lighting and even greater memories.
