Behind The Lens

Location

Formerly known as Edwards Gardens, the Toronto Botanical Gardens had been one of my favourite place for photos, great selection of botanicals, and will also find these fellows and other wildlife animals here.

Time

It was late afternoon/early evening, was one of my routine heading this area for my evening sport activity, and since I have a time gap periodically I would drop by this place for pictures. There's adequate natural light at the time to luminate the subject naturally.

Lighting

It happened to be a day with good weather, the late afternoon sunlight shined on this fellow produced a warm pleasant portrait. The light also was coming perfectly from the left providing good contrast of highlights and shadows.

Equipment

Nikon D7100 was the camera body used at the time, and I had since moved to a full-frame Nikon body. It was of great benefit utilizing that body with a DX sensor, along with the Nikkor 200-500mm 5.6E telephoto zoom lens for the extra reach in close-up photos, harnessing the resolution and details. Picture was taken hand-held without additional flash or reflectors to minimize disturbance to the subject.

Inspiration

Wildlife photography has always been one of my favourites, through practices not only picking up the photographic techniques, but also understanding the wildlife habitats. Facial expression, body movement/posture from picture also give us room for curiosities and imaginations to what is actually in the mind of the subject, which is one of the key things I look for in this kind of photographs.

Editing

I like to keep photos as original as possible, typically I would only have minor adjustments apply, including brightness, contrast, saturation. This one is of no difference, thus the photo required minimal work straight from the camera.

In my camera bag

My only camera body is the Nikon D600, and accompanying that will depend on the type of photos to be taken, in most cases: General & landscapes: Nikkor AF-S 16-35mm F4 | ND filters | Remote shutter release | Tripod | lens cleaning tools Wildlife/Macro: Nikkor AF-S 200-500 F5.6 | Nikkor AF-S 105mm F2.8 | Tripod | Reflector/stand | Flash

Feedback

Gear, research and patience. Ideally, fast telephoto lens, even better if it's a prime, vibration control will be of great help, you may need good burst speed on your camera at times. Research so you get good understanding of the subject's natural habitat, saves time and effort, allowing you a better chance of getting the capture you're looking for. Patience for sure, and while you're awaiting for that perfect shot, keep your mind open as sometimes the unexpected can be most interesting and awarding.
