Full moon May 2016. I have had this view in my minds eye for years, tonight the weather is perfectly fine. Drive 20 miles at 3 am, climb the mountain, set up and wait. Mist drifts over lake Curragh in Underberg , jackals and eagle owls call, sublime moments intimately connected to the valley then the universe beyond. Mars and Saturn lie down to rest. Tip Top milk truck drives by to collect this mornings takings. The soft breeze sways silvered bedewed grass. Mmoon shadows creep gently through mysterious landscapes. NOW! Heaven at rest. Sublime

I took this photo on a freezing cold morning at full moon set , about 05.30,with a stiff mountain breeze, halfway between Underberg and Kokstad. to get the composition i climbed up from the main road onto the hillside, and positioned myself behind some exciting foreground which i had previously earmarked for this shotTime
I woke at 03.30 to get going. a few hours later at 05.00 i was set up and ready for the setting full moon, and Mars too. By 05.30 I was ready to start focusing and testing my planned exposures,Lighting
Too be honest, I had tried and tried again to get my exposures to match my dreams of a good capture. Time being of the essence in this instance with the moon setting so fast, I had read and re read many blogs and advice for long exposures combined with panning, and got a little tangled.... eventually though my research paid off, because two things stood out for me, 1 Lowest possible ASA, in this case 100. and secondly ""Light Painting in the foreground grass and shrubbery"" with my cell phone LED torch.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 600d, with standard KIT 50mm lens. A wobbly old tripod which has seen better days, set very low on the ground to stabalise it in the stiff breeze. and a good flask of HOT COFFEE !Inspiration
I love panoramas, the wider the better for me. What i'm trying to capture in my final images is the vast space of our environment. In my work final printed images can measure beyond 10 m (30 feet) wide, covering whole walls to a height of 3m (10 feet) high. printed on special fabrics with framing. When viewed they instill a sense of the grandeur of the vistas. I wanted a night shot of Carragh lake revealing hidden mystery and enigmatic forms and shapes, reminiscent of an earlier history, and yet also showing the farming community waking up, as depicted by the milk lorry light trails.Editing
Firstly I selected Tungsten light settings. This gives a better start for me for night photography. Then I panned 10 exposures for the sky, then another 10 for the mid ground, and finally another 10 for the foreground. All exposures where on the same ASA 100 and F stop of F16. Prefocused on the middle distance, then auto focus switched off, and mirror lock up engaged. Finally a 2 second timed release was used to stabilize the camera. I use Photoshop CS 4 to combine these images, and edit here and there in terms of saturation, exposure. I am self taught with CS 4, and find my workflow differs considerably from ""standard"" procedure. Every picture is unique, every edit is thus also unique. In my camera bag
Until recently I have had a succession of Canon point and shoots, graduating to this Canon 600d a few months ago. One body, and three kit lenses is all I can manage at present, so sharp glass on a full frame will just have to wait... but it will come along in time. A wobbly tripod which takes a beating on trails, spare charged batteries, 8 gig card, Gloves!!!! HOT COFFEE!!! and finally a dose of enthusiasm bounding on a sort of mania i reckon... Its all so beautiful and so little photographed....Feedback
I think that living in this age of unlimited access to advice and training via the Net, especially VB, has opened up the possibilities of learning so much from others. Use the sites to become inspired by others portfolios, and then practice practice practice your art.. never leave home without your camera, and widen your scope of photography by pushing into new realms. Above all be passionate and become involved... there are billions of photos being downloaded nowadays, never be afraid to show off your own work. Have fun!
