Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the shoreline of Ocean Beach, San Diego CA. It was a negative tide so the reef was showing itself and creating these pockets of calm water giving off the reflection of the sky and pier.

Time

I took this photo about 20 minutes before sunset. The clouds were very interesting and along the horizon there were breaks in the clouds for the sun to shine through giving the sky some real depth and tone to it.

Lighting

I used a 10 stop ND filter to create a 3-5 second exposure while it was still pretty light outside. This allowed me to get the best reflection possible and smooth out the waves in the background to create a nice calm atmosphere for the photo while capturing the excitement of the sky.

Equipment

This was shot on a nikon D610 with a 24-85 lens, 10 stop ND, Manfrotto tripod, and a shutter release remote.

Inspiration

I used to live just up the street from this pier and absolutely love the leading lines it gives. This particular shot of the pier I love because the sunset timed perfectly with the negative tide and it turned out to be one of the most beautiful sunsets I have seen. The reflection is what makes this photo for me, otherwise it would be just another pier shot to me as I take and see these types of photos all the time. This day I was at home and noticed the sky opening up and thought it could be a nice sunset. I went back and fourth on whether I should go or not but I quickly jumped in my car and rushed to the ocean as I only had about 20 minutes before it set. I have 4 of my favorite photos from this night so I am very glad I decided to get off the couch and grab my camera.

Editing

This photo was shot in Raw and i have a few versions of it. This particular edit is black and white. I really wanted to capture the mood and tones from this image so the black and white version has become my favorite as of late. The color version is very vibrant as the lighting and colors were amazing, but there is something about black and white that really speaks to me more with this image. I feel it isn't distracting with all the colors, it brings my eye straight to the reflection and long line from the pier moving through the space. The color version is very beautiful and eventually you get to the same place as this but the black and white is very straight forward with the purpose of this composition.

In my camera bag

When I am shooting landscape I always have my Nikon 14-24 f/2.8 and my 24-70mm. I don't have ND filters for the 14-24mm as of yet but I always have polarizers and ND's with my for all my other lenses. I work mostly with natural light so unless I have a specific shot in mind I leave the flashes at home.

Feedback

This image really came from the fact that I got up off the couch and rushed to see the sunset. As cliche as it is, just getting out there allows you to get the photos you were looking for. This image did rely on timing of the tides, size of the surf, clouds in the sky, and the sunset really showing itself along with me having my big 10 stop filter with me to slow down my shutter. Very minimal equipment and the willingness and drive to get out there and explore the scenery where I live is how this shot came about.
