This photo was taken in my parents back garden in Suffolk. Being self taught, I tend to take a lot of images in places I'm comfortable being at and where I know where the light is coming from at particular times of day.Time
This photo was taken on a chilly, wintery morning on 31st January, 2013 at around 10 A.M. We'd had some snow overnight, and the clouds were dispersing, allowing some weak wintery sunlight to peek through.Lighting
As I recall, it was quite a cloudy morning, the kind of dark stormy snow-clouds that make everything look foreboding and pretty grim. However, the stiff breeze opened up a few gaps in the clouds, allowing a bit od weak sunlight through to brighten things up a bit. It was a pretty even light when I took this, with the snow helping out by acting as a large reflector to fill in some of the shadows.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 30D with a Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 telephoto. Handheld with a shutter speed of 1/320 @ f3.5.Inspiration
My mum went through a phase of taking care of rescue horses (and the odd donkey). I often documented their stay. Tommy here was a little older than most of them and considerably smaller. He had a very unique personality, and I sometimes wondered whether he knew he was actually a horse and not a large dog. I wanted to try and capture this as he ambled over to say good morning.Editing
I'm not particularly good at post processing, and tend to make most of my adjustments in Lightroom, typically, these are local adjustments to exposure and basic stuff like that. I think on this shot, I simply adjusted the colour temperature a little, brought back some detail in the highlights and shadows and then sharpened it before exporting to jpeg from RAW.In my camera bag
My bag probably needs thinning down a bit, as it goes everywhere with me and has pretty much all my gear in it. I have a Canon 40D, Nifty 50 (50mm f1.8 prime lens), a Tamron 17-50f2.8, and the outstanding Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 telephoto. Alongside these sit a Canon 430 speedlight and a cheap flash, assorted filters, cables and batteries and my macbook pro. Saves going to the gym !!Feedback
I'd like to say that you should plan ahead for your shots. This is probably sound advice for landscapes I suppose, but for something like this it's a bit more spontaneous. You should keep an eye out for interesting light conditions initially, and then kind of take it from there. The most important thing is to make sure you have your camera fully charged, with a decent lens attached.
