I took this photo from a hide at my local Nature Reserve in Worcestershire, England. It’s my go to place when I want to just sit quietly and observe the comings and goings of Wildlife. But of course my camera is always with me, so that I can hopefully be lucky enough to capture something special.Time
It was 3:30pm . The hide that I visit the most at the Nature Reserve is often fairly quiet ‘of people’ at that time and although early mornings and evenings are the usual busier times for Wildlife, you can never know what might show up at other times too.Lighting
Truthfully? This photo was a total fluke! I am as amateur as you can get but I enjoy very much taking photographs as a hobby. I always do my best to get a good composition in a shot but I would be lying if I was to say that I know exactly what I am doing as far as lighting and all the other technical stuff is concerned. To this day I have no idea how I managed to get such a misty look in the image because it actually wasn’t a misty day! I took the shot, looked at my camera, turned to my friend and said ‘how on earth did I manage to do that?! I still don’t know how I did it but I do know that I loved the result!Equipment
I used a Nikon Coolpix L340. I hadn’t had the camera for long at the time and I was still getting used to using it.Inspiration
I was fascinated watching the Swan sift through the grass and reeds feeding. To me, observing Wildlife doing what they do is a privilege and there is always something interesting to see. I don’t have expensive camera equipment or the know how of how to use it if I had but for me personally it isn’t important. I see a subject and If I get that feeling of ‘I must capture this!’ That’s my inspiration, it either feels right or doesn’t. Sometimes it pays off and the image of the Swan was one of those times.Editing
As I said above, I am very much an amateur and I don’t understand much at all of the technical stuff to do with photography or the editing of it. This image I cropped slightly using the basic edit app on my computer. In my camera bag
A Nikon Coolpix L340 and a Little Canon grabshot SX260 HS which I have had for many years and I wouldn’t be without it.Feedback
I’m not experienced enough to advise. I can only say, enjoy the experience of taking the photo rather than worrying too much about all the technical stuff. Let the subject tell it’s own story which you will then see in the resulting image.
