Behind The Lens

Location

I had decided that I wanted to do bird photography. I was advised to get a Canon 7D and a 100-400 lens so I did, and set off for the local bird sanctuary. This is one of my first photos with my new equipment, before I really knew much about what I was doing.

Time

This photo was taken mid-day which many people will tell you is not the best time. However, the bird was gorgeous, and it was fascinating to see him/her having his "lunch" of red berries. As you can see, I caught him just munching on a berry, before he swallowed it.

Lighting

I didn't have much choice about lighing as I had to shoot quickly or lose the opportunity. It was a hot, but glorious day and I wandered around the sanctuary, shooting what I could find of interest to myself and others.

Equipment

This was a handheld shot, no tripod, no flash. It was a Canon 7D camera with a 100-400 lens.

Inspiration

I just wanted to get started on my portfolio of birds so even if I didn't know the name of the bird at the time of capture, I would take the opportunity and look it up later. If I couldn't find the bird on my own, I might post on Flickr in their bird identification section. There are so many knowledgeable birders out there who are so kind to help others.

Editing

At this time, I did very little post-processing, as I was new to Photoshop and Lightroom. Luckily, the photo did not need much post-processing. Perhaps a little contrast and/or brightness adjustment.

In my camera bag

When I go to the bird sanctuary, I usually have my Canon 7D, which is the only DSLR camera that I have , and my 100-400 mm. lens. I usually have a tripod as well. My favorite other lens is my 24-100, which I use for most everything else, including aerials.

Feedback

Although I would like to get early morning shots or evening, the sanctuary is only open 9-4 so that is what I am limited to. If I want to get shots other times, I have to go elsewhere. I often drive around with my eagle eye looking for movement which draws my eye to the bird. Or I go to the nearby ocean or take a walk in the woods. There are many opportunities including your own backyard. Be patient, be quiet, and go out every chance you get.
