Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at Lake Bastrup, in the south part of North Zealand in Denmark. The lake is situated in a valley system created by melting water and has a size of about 80 acres.

Time

The photo was taken about an hour before sunset and was one of the last photos I took before I had to leave the lakeside and wander of between the farms close to the lake. The trip to the lake was a ‘spur-of-the-moment’ idea after playing 18 holes of golf. I thought the walk around the lake would take less than an hour but it took me almost two as I was taking a lot of photos along the way. It was a very tired photographer coming home that evening with sore feet.

Lighting

I liked the sun reflecting in the water in between the reeds and had to use some time to get the ISO settings right.

Equipment

The photo is taken handheld with a Nikon D5500 (please see details below). Camera: NIKON D5500 Aperture: f/14 ISO: 160 Shutter Speed: 10/400 Focal Length: 1020/10

Inspiration

The inspiration for the photo was a combination of the sun flare/reflection in the water, the reeds surrounding the half-submerged worn out jetty and the birds resting on it. My initial though was that 'that old jetty really has known better days!'

Editing

The photo has not been edited.

In my camera bag

I carry the Nikon D5500 with a standard 18-55mm lens (AF P NIKKOR DX VR) and a 55-300mm zoom lens (AF-S NIKKOR DX) used for this photo. I also used a HOYA CIR-PL filter for this photo with the intent to balance the reflections and not overexpose it.

Feedback

Be ready to take photos at all hours in the day, in the evening and early in the morning (in short: at all times!). As the right light, the right scene and the right atmosphere will change and may disappear, but not if you are there to capture the moment for all of us to see and enjoy. Evenings where the sun is setting will give opportunities to get silhouettes and shades mixed with sun flares/reflections from the water that adds to the photo.
