During the winter the fur is brown-grey and in the summer it turns orange-brown with white spots adorning the back and a white stripe on the side of the body. Only the male has horns, and their purpose is solely for rituals of display during breeding season.
Every year in February, the horns drop and new ones begin to grow until July. The fallow deer play an important ecological role in their consumption of leaves which controls the Mediterranean vegetation biomass and as a result reduces the risk of wildfires.
