Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken while wandering around a small government dock in Nova Scotia Canada. The dock was mostly fishing tugs with the exception of a few smaller boats like this one.

Time

I normally take pictures in the early morning or later in the day. In this case, it was around mid morning so the shadows are a bit deeper.

Lighting

In this case, mid morning works as the sun hitting the top rails of the boat truly made it glisten like gold.

Equipment

This was shot with my Fuji mirrorless camera with the kit lens.

Inspiration

The shiny rails caused by the sun was strongly contrasting with the weathered wood of the boat and the dock. The boat contrasted with the tugs on the dock. Mostly though, it just felt like something you would see in a fishing village.

Editing

The photo was taken in colour and I also love the colour version of it. But the day felt kind of moody and the black and white image really portrays that moodiness. The black and white image also puts the focus on the boat vs the water or any other part of the image. Other than that the post processing was just some basic cleanup and sharpening a touch.

In my camera bag

If we are traveling around with a vehicle and it will stay near to us, I take my full backpack with my Fuji, 3-4 lens’s and a tripod. If we are out hiking or wandering I tend to take my Sony all-in-one as it’s light and easy and takes good images.

Feedback

For me, photography is about a story. It might be a real story or a story that can be imagined because of the image. It is so easy to miss a story because our eyes and brains take in so much of what is around us. I stop, take a breathe, and look individually at every part of the vista my eyes take in. Inevitably I see that slice of the vista that speaks to me, that tells a story and sets a mood.
