Here is one of my favorite shots from a trip to Yosemite a couple years ago. I am completely self taught when it comes to photography and while I'm not making as many images the last few years as, previous years I like to think the quality is still improving.Time
It was October and very early in the morning when this shot was captured. I recall wearing my gloves, fly-fishing gloves, with half fingers and a fold back mitten, and ear muffs. It warms up quick once the sun is up but the mornings and evenings can be cold in Oct.Lighting
This was a 3 single shots all natural light merged in Nik HDR pluginEquipment
Canon 5DMkII, F8, 1/16,1/50, 1/100, EF14mm, tripodInspiration
Such a beautiful spot that I really just stumbled upon it but could not leave without setting up to capture the imageEditing
As I said this was a HDR image merged in Nik's plug in, also some minor tweaks in Lr. I've never used full Photoshop only Lr, and PSE and a few years ago added Nik's full suite. In my camera bag
Always in my bag..... as much as possible but the last two years I carry less and less. For landscapes I will have a Manfroto CF550 and pistol grip head or ball head. Only one body with me usually and it my trusty 5DMkII. Maybe a light meter, always a remote trigger and batteries for everything along with a horse hair brush and cleaning supplies. My always with me glass - 35mmf1.2, 17TS-Ef4, 24/105f4 and fisheye 8/15f4Feedback
The only advise for someone wanting to capture a similar shot would be go early, use a tripod, eat lunch take a nap and go back in the evening. I believe in golden hour so I leave in the dark and get home in the dark often. Up until 10:00AM the light can still be good but rarely will I shoot anything great from 10:00 on until the last few hours of daylight which is also good for me. These times of day also have less wind usually which can be an advantage for a few reasons. Don't like to shoot what you see everyone else shooting, try getting off the trail or getting low or trying a different angle.
