Location
I took this photo in the foothills of the Canadian Rocky Mountains NW of Calgary. It's on a remote range road that has at least 5-6 mating pairs of Great Grey Owls living year round.Time
This was shot just after sunrise approx 7amLighting
Shooting owls at sunrise is challenging due to low light. Especially if cloudy which it was this day but is the best time of day to catch them still huntingEquipment
Shot using a Nikon D4s with a Sigma 120-300 f2.8. Handheld and n flash ISO 640 f2.8 1/1000 sec.Inspiration
I luv shooting owls. For me it's a lot like shooting sports my other favourite photos to take. The more you do it the more you learn about how to anticipate what the owl is going to do. Great Grey Owls always seem to be willing subjects and are not worried about me just watching and taking picturesEditing
I brightened this picture a little bit in Lightroom and also applied some noise reduction. In my camera bag
Nikon d4s and d500. Recently bought the Nikon 200-500 f5.6 This lens paired with the Nikon d500 crop sensor body is an amazing package for shooting wildlifeFeedback
Read as much as you can about the subject you are going to shoot. For owls they are all different... Habitat, when they hunt, best time of day to find them. Once find a willing subject respect the animal and approach slowly a little bit at a time. Watch and learn behaviour and will be able To anticipate what they will do next.
