Behind The Lens

Location

This is the iconic & spectacular MacKenzie Falls in the Grampians National Park, Victoria, Australia. This is also perhaps one of my most cherished photographs as this was the first time I had successfully ventured out of my comfort zone, travelling great distances and climbing down 110 metres to capture the falls from various angles. By the time I returned to the car, I was bone tired from the steep climb but smiling ear to ear from the fantastic experience.

Time

This image will always hold a special place for me. I had woken up at 3:00 am in Auckland, New Zealand to catch a 6:00 am flight to Melbourne. Arriving in Melbourne at 9:00 am, I drove 4 hours straight to the Grampians National Park. It was early afternoon when I finally made it to the Mackenzie Falls and the day was beginning to get overcast. So while I was shooting with slow shutter speed, I needed to hurry before the falls would lose anymore light from the late afternoon sun.

Lighting

This photograph was taken in the late afternoon with the sky getting overcast intermittently. This particular shot was perfectly timed as the sun peaked out lighting up the falls briefly. I would love to go back there earlier on a clear day and capture the falls with reflections in the pools forming below.

Equipment

Canon EOS 70D, 16-35mm f/4L IS USM lens, Manfrotto Tripod, Hoya Filter, Trigger remote.

Inspiration

The MacKenzie falls are truly iconic and mesmerising. The ability to be so close to the falls and feel the water cascading down like beautiful milky white curtain was indeed a moment worth capturing forever. I had hoped to create a sense of being at the scene for all those who view this image.

Editing

Landscape photography does require a lot of post-processing. In this particular instance, however, the post-processing has been very simple. I have cropped the image to bring the focus to the waterfall and retouched in Photoshop to highlight the colour of the stones and sand mounds.

In my camera bag

My kit includes the Canon EOS 70D with the 16-35 mm f/4L IS USM Lens, 18-135mm and the 50mm lens; Trigger Remote; extra batteries; extra memory cards, charging cables and Manfrotto Tripod. Shortly the canon 24-70 mm lens f/2.8L II USM will be joining this small family.

Feedback

Landscape photography is all about patience and perseverance. The weather changes abruptly and often things don't go as planned usually. Dawn and dusk are key times to be out there waiting for the spectacular moment to happen. In saying that, capturing a sunstar on a bright day, the effect of the wind and clouds streaking across the sky are worth being out there for. Diversify, have patience and plan ahead.
