I took this photo in our apartment while lying on the floor to get his attention, because he usually never looks at me.Time
I remember taking this in the late afternoon, I had been stalking him and his younger feline companion that afternoon to get a good shot of them.Lighting
He was just barely in the living room where all the lights were on, and he was starting to go into the hallway where the light was off and I really didn't want him to go there since I didn't have my flash available. I was shocked when he suddenly stopped, then sat and just looked at me.Equipment
I used my Nikon D5300 at 195 mm using my Nikkor 55-300 mm lens, lying on the floor using my arms as a triangle for balance and no flash as it was still in my bag. My settings on my camera were at 1/80 sec shutter speed, at f 5 for my aperture and my ISO at 1000 since it was late afternoon and there was a chance that my subject would run away from me into the darkness.Inspiration
As I said earlier, our oldest cat, Flapjack, is hard to take photos of, he almost always knows when I'm ready with the camera and ignores me. He is the finickyest cat we have, and when I had an opportunity to get him while his attention was on me, I just had to capture him. With animals and kids, you have to always be on the look out for those rare opportunities and have your camera at hand.Editing
I post-processed this photo in Adobe Lightroom 5.7 and all I did was mess with the temperature, adjusted the exposure, the sharpness a tad and cropped it so his eyes and markings were the most captivating parts in the photo. In my camera bag
The equipment I usually have in my bag is my Nikon D5300, Nikon AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1.8 G, AF-S Nikkor 55-300mm 4.5-5.6 ED, AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1.4 G, AF-S Nikkor 18-55 3.5-5.6 G II kit lens, and Yongnuo YN 568EX with the YN622N wireless trigger and transceiver set, which works well when I know what I'm doing. I also have a Tamron 70-200 mm f 2.8 lens that I usually keep at home (being a truck driver, that is too heavy and expensive of a lens to carry in a semi), but usually have on my camera when I am at home.Feedback
I am a self taught photographer and I'm still learning, and will always learn new things each day, no matter if I'm learning new things about my camera, new technique, or just new ways of processing my photos in Lightroom or Photoshop. I've learned that when it comes to wanting to get that specific moment of an animal, especially a cat, you always have to be ready with a camera and with a good fast lens. As heavy as my Tamron 70-200 f 2.8 lens is, I've found it to be the best one to use due to the zoom capabilities, which will keep me out of my cat's view and hopefully unaware of me trying to capture a moment in their lives. Having the f 2.8 helps a lot if the situation ends up being in low light also. I have learned a lot from other photographers on this sight and many others that are available for free. I know a lot of that information can be intimidating, but there are so many great photographers out that that are willing to share their experiences with you so that you may learn the joy of photography also. Enjoy life and take lots of photos!
