The spillway was opened to prevent an overflow by the Des Moines River in central Iowa. An abundance of small fish flowed through the dam with the water and a flock of gulls, probably 1500 of them, gathered in the coming darkness to collect the easy dinner of stunned fish. Quite a sight. The gulls extended at least half a mile downriver below the dam diving and eating, diving and eating. .
