Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at my company called Syndrome Studio based out of Los Angeles. It's a photo of my dog Dino who we got from the Los Angeles Boxer Rescue around a year ago.

Time

I took this photo in doors. Had a 3 light setup one over head and two on each side of him, was going for contour lighting. So shooting in doors gave me the most control I needed over the lighting.

Lighting

I got very lucky with this shot of Dino my boxer. He hates being photographed, just hates it. Took a lot of photos and out of all of them this is the only one where he doesn’t seem grumpy. He has a lot of personality and attitude, but we love him.

Equipment

This was shot handheld on a Canon 7d with an 24mm F/3.5. Used 3 light set up that I bought off of amazon for cheap and finished the photo in Photoshop. For all my photos I end up finishing in photoshop.

Inspiration

What inspired me to take this photo of Dino was me trying to practice more of my lighting technique. Also trying to take a photo of Dino not looking so grumpy. I just started really trying to improve my photography about 6 months ago. One of the biggest thing for me to learn is camera settings and lighting techniques. Which I’m on a daily search to learn more and try new ideas. The internet has been a great source of help, with website like Veiwbug finding inspiration, ideas or even reading about other photographers and their technique has been a huge help in my development.

Editing

Yes, I do post-processing on all my photos. My background is graphic design/motion graphics. I love to be creative it's what gets me out of bed everyday. On a daily bases I’m in photoshop cutting up, manipulating or treating images. With all my black and white photos I Dodge and Burn them. I'm looking to push the contrast in the photos and facial features. I also have photos were I superimpose images, 3d or just about anything I can imagine. With this photoI added a little touch of personality by adding the skull and cross bones onto his tag bag.

In my camera bag

The equipment I normally use and always have in my camera bag is my Canon 7D with a 24mm lens. I’m looking to up grade soon to the Canon 5DSR. But if I'm in a situation where I don't have my Canon I will use my iPhone6 and treat with the app Afterlight.

Feedback

My advice for other photographers trying to capture a similar look and feel is to keep playing with lighting and your camera settings. There isn’t a right answer to this, the only real answer is are you satisfied with your end results. I'm always studying other photographer’s photos. I’m fascinated on how they might of come up with an idea or gone about figuring out their lighting setup.
