The photo was taken in my childhood home in California. At the time, I was just starting to get into photography and I found my love of taking animal pictures.Time
During this point in my photography career I was just learning how to use light to enhance my images. I usually used natural sunlight to light my photos, but for this one I had to use a hanging incandescent light bulb because it was night time.Lighting
Cats love to figure out the mysteries of humans, which seem to include the "magical" light bulb. My cats can not resist sniffing them sometimes, and this is what happened for this image. The bulb was just a regular incandescent light bulb hanging from its cord from the ceiling.Equipment
I used a small Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 to take this shot.Inspiration
When I first started to explore photography I was too nervous to shoot actual people so I focused on my household animals. My cat Sasha, who is the one from the picture, became my main model and I followed her everywhere. I would always see cat pictures on different photography websites and I wanted to amplify my own images and come up with something different. For this photo I focused on finding something fierce and strong, to show that cats don't always have to be cute and cuddly.Editing
I mainly use Lightroom to enhance my images, so for this particular image I darkened the shadows and used the preset "punch."In my camera bag
I have a cross body camera bag that I take with me everywhere, which usually contains my Canon EOS Rebel T3i with a 50mm lense. I also always carry duct tape because you really never know when you're gonna need duct tape for a shot.Feedback
If you are like how I was when I started, which is shy and new to photography, it helps to start small and then be more creative to amplify your images. You also have to be patient, because it is not always easy to capture that perfect picture in one shot. It takes a lot of shots to sometimes find that diamond in the rubble and when you do find it... it is so rewarding.
