Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Canadian Raptor Conservancy in Vittoria, Ontario. They do captive breeding, rehabilitation, research and consulting, television and motion picture birds. They are a terrific organization, educating people about raptors.

Time

This photo was taken around 2 in the afternoon

Lighting

It was extremely challenging to capture this photo...had to play with the settings a lot as this beautiful white raptor did not offer much contrast to the snowy background.

Equipment

This was shot with Canon 7D Mark II using my 70- 200mm f2.8 the light was not great that day

Inspiration

I am a raptor lover-plain and simple. The Snowy is one of my favourite owls and living in Southwestern Ontario.....I don't see very many. Any chance to snap a picture of this beautiful creature.....I will take.

Editing

All I did post process to this photo was lighten the mid tones slightly...just enough to help distinguish the white owl from the white background.

In my camera bag

I usually carry my Canon 7D Mark II for wildlife....my 100-400mm f4.5 is really my "go to" lens. I always have the 70-200mm f2.8 for lower light, On this particular day I let my husband use the 400 and I used the 200. I also always have my wide angle along (in case there are some landscape photos to be had)

Feedback

I love to shoot birds, simply because they are challenging. A bird in flight is even more challenging. I always try to focus on their eyes, and always use continuous shooting with them to capture all their wing movements.
