Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on the Tonle Sap Lake in Cambodia.

Time

We were taking a boat from Siam Reap to Phnom Pen and ended up in this part of the ride around midday. The sun was quite unforgiving.

Lighting

It was not an ideal lighting situation since the sun was overhead and super bright. There wasn't much I could do about it at the moment so I shot what I could and tried to mitigate the noon light in post.

Equipment

My Nikon D7000 and Nikkor 18-105

Inspiration

This boat ride through this area was fascinating. Being from a landlocked state, this lifestyle was completely foreign to me and I wanted to capture how these people lived their lives. I loved seeing everyone going about their daily business, transporting goods via small rafts and children playing in houses with water instead of yards.

Editing

I loved how colorful the scene was, so I bumped up some of the vibrancy to combat the washed out effect the bright sun had. I also brought down the highlights and brought up the shadows to even out the exposure.

In my camera bag

When I travel I am usually away from home for a month or two at a time. This means I have extremely limited space and weight available for gear. I also know the risk of damage or theft is high, so I try not to take anything that would be devastating to lose. My travel go-tos are a Nikon D7000, a Nikkor 18-105, a Tokina 11-16 F2.8 a few polarizing filters and a Joby gorilla pod (my absolute favorite travel accessory). If I have the space and know there will be an abundance of wildlife where I am going then I pack a Tamaron 70-200 F2.8 and a Nikkor 50 F1.8.

Feedback

Since we were speeding by on a boat, I had to rely a lot on luck for this shot. When shooting a similar scene, my advice would be to try to keep your background as even as possible (both horizontally as well as vertically across the frame) and include something in the foreground. That adds a depth and dimension to your image and helps to tell a story.
