This photo was taken in my home studio in Moscow. I was working with a great team: body artist Kate Balycheva and a model Elena Khokhlova.Time
Kate is a meticulous artist. Everything she does has to be perfect, so sometimes it takes more time, that you expected. It took her 8 hours to finish this exact piece and it was already late night when we start shooting.Lighting
On this photo, I used my favorite lighting scheme. It is a beauty dish in front and above the model's face and a reflector under the face. The reflector is not only softening shadows but also brings beautiful sparkles in model's eyes.Equipment
The photo was taken with Canon 5D Mark II and Canon 70-200/f2.8 II USM, the light source is a Hensel monolight 500.Inspiration
It is not every day a creative team gets crazy assignments. We had a week of regular headshot session with beautiful people and decided to celebrate the first day off with something crazy and uncommon. Don't get me wrong, we like to do both, just sometimes it is nice to switch tasks to freshen your perception and unleash the dark side of your creativity :)Editing
Our model is not a vampire, but a beautiful young girl with nice warm skin tone and some almost invisible unperfections on her face. In order to complete the photo, I took away the warmness of her skin to make it almost perfectly white and also make some usual face retouching. The total editing time was about 1 hour.In my camera bag
The size and content in my bag greatly depend on assignment. If it is a basic headshot session, I usually have my Canon 5D Mark II and Canon 85/f1.2 with me. If we are going hiking with friends and I don't want to miss the opportunity to take some new beautiful landscape photos, I add a fisheye Canon 15/f2.8 to my gear.Feedback
First and foremost, the team is important. Body painting is a very time-consuming process and, believe it or not, to be the model would be the hardest part. It is very exhausting to stay/sit/lay still for many hours. Find something which is as excited as you to make the project happened. Be sure that you have enough time to complete the project. It is better to reserve all day for body painting. Better job the body artist does, lesser you have to correct in Photoshop later.
