The photo is taken in Gerlache Strait at the Antarctic Peninsula. I've been trying to get the perfect shot of penguins when breaking the surface for some time now. This is one of the better ones i have so far.Time
The picture is shot around 10PM in December 2015, i think date, time was set to UTC+1 if looking at the EXIFLighting
Not much to say about the light. Usually during december there is good light until midnight ...Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D4s and a AF-S 80-400mm G lensInspiration
This is probably one of my favorite shot of penguins when breaking the surface. I've been trying to get the perfect shot of penguins when breaking the surface for some time now. They swim very fast and keep changing direction all the time, so they are not very predictable at all. This is one of the better ones i have got so far.Editing
This shot didn't need much PP at all. I used Capture One and LR on this shot. Just added some contrast and sharpnessIn my camera bag
the first thing i always pack for trips like this is my Nikon D4s and the 80-400mm and then some small primes for landscape. Sigma 35 and 50mm f/1.4 and a nikkor 85mm. Wish to bring more stuff but have to stay as light as possible on trips like this. Maybe i will add a Nikon D500 for the next trip coming up.Feedback
The Antarctic Peninsula has unique characteristics and is one of the last wilderness almost untouched by humans. The nature is the most magnificent I have had the pleasure of experiencing and the light "can" be magical. The biggest challenge is the weather, it changes abruptly depending on the day you can have sun, snow and heavy wind and back to sunny and nice. All within a few hours.
