Location
This photo was taken in the amazing South African town of Knysna in the Western Cape. There are so many great things to photograph in Knysna, from the Ocean, to the forests and many local fauna and flora exclusive to the area. The specific spot that this photo was taken from was reached by a small walking trail to the edge of the Pezula Cliffs, one of my absolute favourite spots in the world!Time
This photograph was taken on New Years Day 2016, I had recently purchased a DJI Phantom 3 and after about a weeks worth of practice decided to test it out. After about a 15 minute hike with my brother to the location, one battery down, and a lot of discussion with my brother as to what would make the best shot, I was extremely happy with the photograph that was achieved. The photo was taken on 1 January 2016 at 11:04 AM.Lighting
Due to the extremely calm day over the ocean, the sea was giving off an enchanting emerald colour, which seemed to change colour as the sea undulated with the soft rolling of the waves. The lighting was not particularly harsh for this time of day and provided a great contrast between the white of the sea foam and the rich colours of the surrounding cliff faces and ocean.Equipment
This was shot using the DJI Phantom 3 drone, which was slightly difficult to see exactly what to photograph due to the glare on the screen of my iPad.Inspiration
I have always loved photographing this location, however it was the first time I had access to a drone and instantly thought it would be the perfect location for some amazing and truly captivating photographs, something that you are not able to easily see while standing on top of a cliff. The excitement to capture this amazing spot through a new means and angle really was my greatest inspiration, coupled with the amazing weather conditions.Editing
This image went through a bit of post processing, however it was really amazing straight out of camera, I found that the colours that the RAW photo straight from the drone were a bit flat and did not portray the mood and atmosphere that I experienced while out photographing. The post processing just cropped the image slightly, and helped enhance the colours. In my camera bag
My trusty camera that I cherish and take with me almost everywhere is my Canon EOS 7D, I have many great memories with this camera and feel it meets all my needs. I am a huge fan of the new Sigma Global Vision series of lenses and own a wide array of them, with my favourite being the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM Art lens, followed closely by the 24-105mm F4 DG OS HSM Art lens. These lenses have great optics and I have not been able to fault them.Feedback
Drone photography is always cool as it allows people to experience places and things from a different perspective and often catches the eye of many individuals, even if it is not an amazing photograph. With the latest drones on the market you are easily able to capture amazing photos of really interesting and difficult to reach places, don't be afraid to push the equipment to their limits, I flew the drone approximately 1.2km away from me and slowly scoured the coastline for the perfect position for the shot. I suggest that you find a location that truly has meaning to you and through that find inspiration to show it off to the world, and most of all enjoy every minute of a shoot, never feel like it is a job, but rather a passion.
