This photo was taken in Sister Bay, WI. The Edith M. Becker takes groups out for sunset tours every night during the summer months, and I was fortunate to capture this image from the marina as they were sailing past the sun.Time
This photo was taken during sunset on August 17th, 2012.Lighting
The clouds in the sky during the sunset created a fire-like appearance. If it wasn't for the clouds, the sunset would have been pretty, but not nearly as exciting.Equipment
I used a Canon Rebel xt and a Canon 75-300mm lens in auto exposure and program mode. This was before I took the time to learn how to use my camera, so I really got lucky!Inspiration
The inspiration for the photo was that it presented itself, and I simply took the shot.Editing
No post processing, this image was shot as a jpeg before I knew what RAW was.In my camera bag
I normally carry my Canon Rebel T5i and my Sigma 28-80mm zoom lens with a UV filter pretty much everywhere I go. I just started using speed lights, so I also sometimes pack a Neewer TT560 Speedlite with a diffuser. I always have a couple extra batteries and at least one spare memory card, in case the one in the camera fails.Feedback
My advice would be to always have some type of camera available, and ready to go, because you never know what might come up. The worst feeling is to leave your camera at home, have a dead battery or a full memory card the moment something incredible happens. If you're shooting a sunset, the best way to capture color and silhouettes is to underexpose the shot.
