Behind The Lens

Location

In Canyonlands National Park, Utah, USA at the famous Mesa Arch

Time

I was at Mesa Arch for Sunrise. After the sun had set, I zoomed into the Canyons and the Colorado river bed.

Lighting

It was a cloudy day but the sun found a little gap to cast some warm light over the canyons, letting them glow in morning light. I used my 50mm f1.8 Canon lens and exposed for 1/100 at f8.

Equipment

My Canon70D with my 50mm f1.8 on my Manfrotto Action tripod.

Inspiration

During my world trip in 2015, I visited Utah with my fiancée. Canyonlands National Park was high on our bucket list. We wanted to see the famous sunrise at Mesa Arch and after the sun had set, I looked towards the Colorado river bed and saw this beautiful scenery. I loved the light on the nearer canyons and the lines, leading through the image.

Editing

I increased contrast and reduced the highlights to show the amazing colors on the lit canyons.

In my camera bag

I use a Canon 70D with two Canon lenses (18-135mmf3,5; 50mm f1,8) and a Tamron 11-16mm f2,8 lens which is the best ASP-C lens I owned so far. My tripod is a Manfrotto MT055CXPRO3 Carbon tripod with magnesium ball head. It is really sturdy and was a great investment. I didn't realize how important it is to have a good tripod until I used this one. It has really improved the sharpness of my images. I use a third party cable release to release the shutter without touching my camera. My filter set contain a HAIDA Filter holder, a HAIDA 80mm polarizer, a HAIDA 6 stop ND Filter and a NISI graduated ND Filter
