Behind The Lens

Location

I was able to gain exclusive access to the roof of a famous music store in Dublin city which has a very unique view of Dublin castle. I was lucky as not many people get a shot from this perspective.

Time

This was taken just as the sun disappeared below the castle battlements. I surprised my girlfriend to keep her company as she worked the late shift there that evening.

Lighting

What I found amazing about this shot was that it was entirely captured with natural light. I consider myself very lucky to have been at the right place at the right time!

Equipment

Sony a7ii with an adapted Nikon 50mm f1.8d lense

Inspiration

Dublin castle is one of my favourite historical sites in the city. What inspired me was the juxtaposition of old and new Dublin and you can see the passing of time through the buildings. With the intense colours of the firey sunset it seemed like the city was being fought for all over again.

Editing

95? of the processing was done using Adobe light room. I took the image into Photoshop to remove sensor dust. I wanted to highlight the magnificent stone work of the castle and done this by reducing the highlights in the sky and increasing the shadows. There was also some dodging and burning applied to the image.

In my camera bag

Sony a7ii, 24 - 70 f4, 50mm f1.8d.trigger trap. A set of Nd and natural grad filters,my Moto g3 and a note pad and pen

Feedback

Always be ready and patient for the right moment to be captured. Don't underestimate the ability for your own town/city to surprise you. Light can be very fleeting so knowing your camera inside and out is invaluable.
