Location
This photo was set up and taken in our guest bathroom.Time
Since its an indoor shot, I don't remember when it was taken, But according to the EXIF data, it was around 8:30 in the evening.Lighting
I think photographers, or anyone who takes pictures even for fun tend to see lighting situations differently than other people. I had walked into the bathroom to put something away when I turned around and noticed the way the light from the nightlight fell across the wall and sink. It was then that I sat down and actually started to look at the play of light and how it fell and the shadows made by the objects around the sink, and to think about the composition of it, and how I could use it to tell a story. To me, I saw not just the light from a nightlight, but an imaginary world where the bathroom sink was maybe a street, or a dark alleyway were miniature beings lived.Equipment
A Pentax K50 with a Tamron 17-50 F 2.8 lens. Picture was taken handheld, with no flash.Inspiration
I'm not sure exactly where my inspiration came from. I think it was mostly just noticing the lighting, and then trying to come up with an interesting way to utilize that "found" lighting situation. As I looked at the way the light was falling and the shadows, I played with different possible ways to make it an interesting shot of more than just the light. I tried a couple of different toys that I have around the house, but the little bear and penguin just seemed to fit best with thinking of the sink as a dark, possibly frightening little world that the two friends were in.Editing
I don't have Photoshop, I only have a couple of basic editing programs. With this particular shot the only adjustments I made were in iPhoto, where I did a bit of sharpening, and de-noised it a bit. No cropping was done on this particular image. In my camera bag
My K50 is my primary camera. Even though I have several lenses the ones I use most of the time are my Tamaron 17-50 F 2.8 and a Sigma 70-300 1:4-5.6. If I am going to travel light and not take my entire kit with me these are the parts I toss into a small bag or backpack for local shoots.Feedback
Always be on the lookout for situations that can provide interesting shots. Don't limit yourself to seeing anything one way and only one way. Try to develop an eye to see things in a new way, or a way that someone else might pass by. The idea to "think different" can frequently be used in photography, but using situations that you come across as a backdrop for ideas that someone else might just see as a routine, boring object. Don't be afraid to push the boundaries and to experiment! If it doesn't work delete it and move on! You never know what wonderful things you can create through the lens until you give it a shot!
