This photo was taken at Quarton Lake in Birmingham, MI. I am a fairly new, self taught photographer so every new weather event is a new opportunity to play with my camera and learn something new.Time
I had shot some photos while it was snowing the night before (as it turns out, my "snowing" photography still needs some work) and decided I'd walk down to the lake in the morning to try again. I was delighted to wake up to about 8 inches of snow and a beautiful clear day. I wanted to get there while the snow was still untouched, but I had to wait until the sun came up over the trees behind me. I shot this photo at about 9 am.Lighting
No special lighting considerations were made other than waiting for the morning sun to rise above the trees behind me to illuminate the water and the snow covered trees.Equipment
This photo was shot with a Canon 600D with a 18-55mm lens. No other equipment was utilized for this photo.Inspiration
The first snow of the season was the inspiration for this image. We usually get quite a bit of snow here in Michigan, but the first snow always seems so beautiful. I was trying to capture that beauty and excitement of the first big snow of the season.Editing
I don't remember exactly because I have gotten a new computer since this photo was taken (iPhoto is no longer, thus the settings didn't transfer), but, from what I remember, I think I only cropped the image slightly, boosted the contrast a bit, and I believe I brought down the saturation a bit as well.In my camera bag
At this point, I don't really have that much equipment to choose from so I just bring it all:) By this, I mean my Canon 600D with it's 18-55mm stock lens, a wireless remote, a gorilla-pod, bottled water, and my Starbucks card;)Feedback
I'm not sure I am really in a position yet to be giving advice to anyone, but I think, in addition to, "Your first 10,000 shots will be your worst", and, "If you want to take better pictures, stand in front of better things" (Jim Clow), one of the best pieces of advice that I have gotten thus far is to wear comfortable shoes. If you're standing in front of something beautiful and it looks blah in your finder, you're not going to like it when you get it on your computer either. Recompose the scene in your head and walk to where you can see that new composition. In trying to apply this, one of my photography New Year's resolutions is to take FEWER, more thoughtful photos.
