Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the village of Washtucna, Wa. We were driving to see and photograph Palouse Falls (WA State symbol) when we noticed this abandoned homestead.

Time

The photo was taken around noon, on a hot late Mayday.

Lighting

No artificial lighting was used. The sky was covered with some light clouds, so I took a lot of shots. Later I sorted photos with diffuse light and the ones with direct sun.

Equipment

I used hand held Nikon D7100 with, I believe 70 mm lens.

Inspiration

Twenty-three years ago we moved to Inland Northwest. We wanted to learn more about the people of the region, and I stumbled upon the book "Bad Land" written by an Englishman who married a local girl (forgot his name). He traced her family roots in a documentary manner and beautifully described the struggle for survival of all those people who were initially resettled by a railroad company to the Bad Lands of Montana. It was a one-way ticket, with "take care" and no support from anyone. Ever! Half of them died in the famine, and the majority of the rest slowly moved towards Idaho and Washington state in a search for water. We came to this country on a one-way ticket, only descendants of those people surrounded us with kindness and support.

Editing

I import my photos with Lightroom and make no apologies for it (got some comments). After muting highlights and shadows, I tinker with B&W and tone curve.

In my camera bag

Nikon guy, d810 d7100, wide , zoom, and some prime.

Feedback

I always try to capture and celebrate the dignity of life in my photography.
