Location
This image was captured at Flamborough Head the cliff on the right hand side is Briel Newk, I parked at North Landing Pay and display carpark and its about a fifteen minute walk heading towards the lighthouse on the cliff top path.Time
I set off for this shoot at 5:00 in the morning arriving at North landing car park at about 5:15 am and after a short walk arrived at location about 5:30 and this shot was captured at 5:53amLighting
I quite liked the way the sky was looking and the sea was so still i decided to go for a long exposure and opted to use a little stopper and a 3 stop hard graduated filter over the sky to try and get some detail in the cliffs and sea resulting in a 238 second exposure at f16 and ISO100.Equipment
Canon EOS 5D Mark III, EF17-40mm f/4L USM, tripod, cable release, Lee 0.9 Graduated ND filter and Lee little stopper.Inspiration
I love this area of coastline and luckily it is virtually on my doorstep so I visit it regularly but on this occasion the light was superb but with no waves the only option seemed to go the long exposure rout to create some drama in the skyEditing
I always import to lightroom to make minor adjustments to highlights, shadows, blacks and whites the go to the tone curv section and drag the curve to an s shape before going to lense corrections where I just click the boxes for enable profile correction and remove chromatic abberation then I export to PS to clone out any dust bunnies then I usually adjust levels and sharpen using high pass and thats itIn my camera bag
Canon EOS 5D Mark III, Canon EOS 7D, EF17-40mm f/4L USM, EF 24-105mm f4 L IS USM Lens, 0.3, 0.6 x2, 0.9 x2 hard graduated Lee filters, 0.6 ND filter, Big Stopper, Little Stopper, Circular polariser, landscape circular polariser, manual white balance card, misc cleaning products and a hot shoe spirit levelFeedback
I believe preparation is vital in landscape photography so the day before the shoot I always check the weather forecast, look at cloud maps, tide times and the photographers ephemeris depending on the results of these I plan the location for my shoot for instance this location always looks best at high tide. On the morning of the shoot I always arrive early so I can scout around for good viewpoints and allow plenty of time to set up and be ready to take advantage of the dawn light if it appears
