Location
This was at Lake Minnewanka in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada.Time
On a late September (2014) night, two friends and I headed out to Banff National Park hoping to take pictures of the northern lights (it would have been my first experience of the phenomenon). This particular image was taken around midnight.Lighting
There was a bright moon which adequately lit the scenery.Equipment
16-35 mm lens mounted on a Canon 6D. Tripod was used to allow for a slow shutter speed.Inspiration
While I was waiting for the Aurora Borealis to show up, I took shots of the landscape, beautifully lit by a bright moon which peeked out of the clouds from time to time. I took several shots from different angles but I liked this one because the inclusion of one of my friends provided human interest and depicted reality of what some photographers do to get the shot they want. Night photography proves very challenging when temperatures dip below the freezing point. Photographers are among the most persevering and patient people I know.Editing
I boosted contrast and lifted the shadows. In my camera bag
Along with my 16-35 mm, I usually bring my 50mm f/1.2 lens and a couple of filters and circular polarizers.Feedback
Play with white balance - this particular shot was taken at around 7000 Kelvin.
