Behind The Lens

Location

This little girl is a family friend and her name is Emily as well and I gave her the nickname, "number two". She is wonderful to photograph and has amazing eyes and freckles! This shot was taken in my back yard during a magical time, the golden hour!

Time

This was the best time of day, during the golden hour! The sun was shooting across the ground in a perfect way that added a golden tone to "number twos" already red hair.

Lighting

The lighting was perfect in all senses. Perfect shadows, golden tones and rich colors!

Equipment

I used a canon 70D here. Just freehanded it with natural light.

Inspiration

I fell in love with Emily's freckles. She has the best face to photograph and the best disposition for a young girl. She loved being my model.

Editing

I toned down the orange because she has red tones to her face and hair and the strong golden light made those red tones stronger so I took some red out and boosted a little blue for her eyes.

In my camera bag

Batteries, chargers, hair pins, safety pins, tide spot out, wipes, lollipops, lenses, extra cards, trash bags, zip ties sewing kit and camera equipment of course.

Feedback

Wait for the golden hour to get this kind of light. The light is magical and there is such a short time when it's just perfect. Download an app so you can plan ahead when that golden hour might be. Consider trees and buildings around yourself, it can block golden hour light since it's so low and shoots across. You also don't need a great location. This was shot in my backyard with an ugly shed in the background and a large tree stump, not pretty. Emily's face was the best thing in my backyard!
