This photo was taken at a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breeders home in Michigan near where I live. She has an enclosed area in her backyard that the dogs typically aren't allowed in. But the enclosure is perfect for taking pictures, it's beautifully landscaped and of course the puppies can't escape.Time
If I remember correctly this was taken on a cloudy summer afternoon.Lighting
These isn't anything too special about the lighting. We were outside on an overcast day. Overcast was perfect for capturing these puppies, I didn't have to worry too much about adjusting my settings as we chased them around.Equipment
This was shot with my Nikon D7000 and my 50mm 1.4 lens. No other photography equipment was used. I did use a mouse squeaker call. If you are lucky using this squeaker at the right moment with some dogs will get you the adorable head tilt.Inspiration
I was really hoping to capture the two different color patterns of the puppies. These two were exceptional cute to me with their coloring especially the tricolored one on the right. The puppies had been playing and were starting to get lazy so the timing was perfect. They also were a bit unsure of the wooden crate and didn't dare jump off of it. So, we were able to get their attention with the squeaker and snap a few pictures before they lost interest.Editing
Nothing fancy happened here with post processing. I'm sure I straightened it so the crate was level, a few curve adjustments, and a few small bumps on the color panel. In my camera bag
I'm a hobbyist so my equipment isn't lavish or fancy. I do however have a huge wish list for when we win to lottery!! I always have my Nikon D7000 and my 50mm 1.4 with me. I also have an old 35-70mm 2.8 lens that I like with me. Surprisingly I use my 18-105mm kit lens for landscapes and I'm quite happy with it. Add in an extra battery, remote and a few filters and my bag is complete.Feedback
As you can imagine puppies are a big challenge. My advice would be let them run, play and get the excitement out before you attempt pictures. These two were getting lazy and soon after this picture they were cuddled up with their litter mates napping. The other piece of advice I have is to use a noise maker of some sort to get a head tilt. But don't use it until your absolutely ready. With some dogs you only get 1 chance with the noise and they're no longer interested, if you squeak it too soon they'll figure it out and won't care a bit about it. Other dogs with run right up to you to see what you have. But, sometimes you'll get the precious head tilt and the eye contact you are hoping for.
