Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken in a friends back yard. when I just started out as a photographer, I'd like to say I was self-taught but with help of peers and mentors I've managed to be comfortable with what I love doing.

Time

I remember this shot, at the time I didn't think much of it as I was doing a model shoot with a friend of mine and her dogs were running around the yard while we were doing our shoot. half way through she went to the loo and I was just playing around with my camera settings while snapping a few photographs of the dogs. later while sorting through the images I remembered this one.

Lighting

The lighting for this was tough to figure out. the original was in colour and not very elegant or dramatic. So thanks to the handy tool Photoshop I was able to produce a work I am truly proud of.

Equipment

I used my Olympus 1000D camera, I took the photograph freehand so no tripod was used and I used ambient lighting (natural lighting).

Inspiration

The original shoot I was doing was to capture dichotomy, or rather the struggle between one's mind when given a choice. So when I discovered the perfect composition that had happened in this image I realised I had found my winning shot. The two dogs represent the two main parts of one's personality and the 'tug-of-war' juggle between the two.

Editing

I personally am not a fan of post-production, however, for this photograph, I did do some. For example turning the photograph from full colour to black and white and dodging and burning some of the backgrounds in order to create the desired dramatisation.

In my camera bag

I usually shoot on the go so I prefer not having to lug around a lot of equipment, especially when I don't shoot in the safest of places. So I always have an extra battery pack and memory card just in case. also, I mainly use my standard 50 mm for a 35 mm lens. I like to challenge myself, so if I'm required to change my lens half way through my shoot I'd rather first see what I can do with the one I have on my camera body and change lenses if I can't get what I'm looking for. Sometimes it's best to first exhaust every option before making a change. Strange way to work I know but I feel that it allows for more creativity.

Feedback

Hmm... The best advice I can give is to never give up especially if it's your passion. yes, sometimes it gets hard to pay the bills and sometimes it feels like you have no support but remember you're not alone. When it gets tough it shows you that you're close to greatness. Also, something I've learned over the years always has your camera on you especially if you prefer to take street photography or prefer the more raw, instant emotions like me. Don't loose that award winning shot because you don't have your equipment.
