Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo during a trip to the southern part of Brazil at the Serra do Papagaio State Park (Parrot's Mountain Rage) . We hiked over one of the highest mountain range in Brazil where we covered nearly 65 miles camping in the wild for three days.

Time

I planned to shoot this photo from the moment I knew that I was going to reach the highest point in the region at 7,000 ft. So, I decided to get there at the peak by sunrise due to the fact that from this point we have an splendid view from the valley below.

Lighting

I really love this photo by the fact that the morning mist was still trapped among the mountains giving it a very peaceful feeling putting your your mind into a meditation state.

Equipment

It was shot on a Nikon D800 with Nikkor 24-120mm f/4 at 120mm, f/6.7, 1/90s, ISO 200 mounted on Tripod.

Inspiration

After the first day of hiking we had to set up the tents by the time the sun was already setting in the horizon, therefore I chose a spot as closes as possible to the peak so in the next morning i could reach it just before the sun was rising. I knew i would have a very short window of opportunity to do all this in order to get back to the campsite by the time everybody else was ready to set off for another day of hiking. Thankfully everything just worked as predicted and I was able to capture this fantastic morning.

Editing

All my digital files go through some adjustments. I always shoot in raw so that way i can process the digital image in Lightroom without compromising the image quality. First of all, as I always do with all my images, I first analyze the histogram and decide what kind of adjustment it will be needed such as exposure, contrast and adjusting the black and white points. Then, I usually color correct it and apply some saturation. In this particular image, after the basic alterations were done, I applied the graduated filter to the upper part to bring down the exposure by 1/2 stop while I overexposure the bottom by 1 stop with some clarity to bring up some details on the clouds below.

In my camera bag

Im always looking to travel as light as possible. I usually research about the location I'm heading to in order to decide what kind of lenses I will be taking with my Nikon D800. I own a Nikkor 24-120mm f/4, Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8, Tokina 17-35mm f/4 and a Tamron Macro 90mm f/2.8. Although, I try to be restrict between two lenses, but the one that I never take out of my bag is the Nikkor 24-120mm for being a very versatile lens that gives me a large range of opportunity and creativity in a single lens. My tripod is another very useful tool to be bring along specially during the golden hours (early in the morning and by dawn) or when Im doing night photography.

Feedback

My advice to capture stunning photos is to choose the right location that you will be shooting from paying attention to the lighting and the subject in question. Probably, laziness is your main drawback if you want to achieve the differential. In this particular photo, I had to wake up before first light to be able to get at the location ahead of time in favor to plan the best composition and be ready in case of any surprises I can face along the way. Also, be aware of the weather and the lighting conditions is very important to adjust your equipment accordingly.
