Fine image and congrats on winning.
This image is so well balanced, the calm see the bots in the foreground and distance. the fine sea bird and the warmth of the sun across the whole photo.

Location
This photo was taken at the pier in Key West. I am a self taught photographer. I found the depth of field and lighting to be challenging but was able to capture some beautiful shots that evening.Time
Every evening hundreds to thousands of people gather at the pier in Key West to watch the sunset. The mood is festive - how could it not be. Watching the sun go down and the sun vanish behind the horizon is awe inspiring.Lighting
My goal behind this shot was to capture a moment in time that would flood my brain with memories each time I saw it hanging on my wall. The image serves as a daily reminder of God's work and how the simple beauty in the world can bring inner peace.Equipment
I was using my Nikon 5000 with a 70-300 mm lens.Inspiration
I was inspired to take this picture by the magnitude of the beauty. I wanted to capture that special moment in time. I highly recommend the trip to the Keys just to take photos.Editing
The only post processing I did was to straighten the horizon line. The colors in the Keys are magnificent and each evening is different. In my camera bag
Depending on what I am going to shoot for the day I usually have the Nikon 5000 with a wide angle attached and the Nikon 7100 with a zoom attached. I typically shoot at horse shows and find changing lenses takes too much time and I can miss a shot.Feedback
Take the trip to the Keys. Before going to the pier we spent the day biking Key West. There are so many opportunities for pictures it is crazy. I was in the Keys for a week and pretty sure I took well over a thousand pictures. Now, not all of them turned out like this but I was pretty pleased with most of them. My best advice - keep your camera with you and take pictures, look for the unusual, and look for the emotion.
