This Photo was taken in Sodwana Bay, South Africa Fantastic macro photography. One of the best diving reefs in the world. I dive with Reefteach, Sodwana Bay. Its a whip coral goby, the whip coral is as big as a pinky finger. The goby is a thumb nail big I love macro, it is very challanging, and very rewarding..Time
The photo was taken around 10;00 in the morning. The best time to get lovely pics is early in the mornings. The visibility on the day also play a big role.Lighting
I use an external Ikelite Autoflash strobe to get the vibrant colours You need to adjust white balance, Iso... etc on every subjectEquipment
My beauty is a Canon G7X in a Fantasea Line housing Ikelite Autoflash Fantasea Big Eye lensInspiration
I scout the sea for macro shots, there is so many challanges on the reefs. There is shrimps, nudi's my favourite. Sometimes you are lucky and get the most amazing little critters. Around every corner you get a surprise. That is why it is so much fun, you never know what you will find, its like a lucky packet every dive. A sunny day is the best, overcast weather you need a flash light or a strobeEditing
On this particular photo I used Lightroom Classic. I cropped, did brightness and contras and a little bit of fibrance. Sometimes there will be backscatter that you remove. To get the picture in focus is a bonus because the whip coral move with the water. Its the most rewarding feeling when you download and your pic is in focus and fabulousIn my camera bag
Underwater photography require a couple of things. First you need to prep your housing and strobe so it do not leak water. Its a very bad feeling if your housing leak and you loose your camera. Your batteries must be charged fully, you cant abort dive to replace a battery. So its my camera, housing, strobe. My Nocturnal flash light, and my Fantasia Big eye lens.Feedback
The best advice I can give anyone is to go for a course, it took me a long time to figure out the settings and how fast and effective to change them on the housing without looking. I only shoot on manual. By the time you have your settings right... the object will be gone. Don't rush, take your time and plan your pic. You need to take one or two shots because there are other divers that also want to take a pic. Diving is with a group of people and you need to consider other divers as well. If you take to long on a subject, you will loose the group and get lost. Hectic but super great...
