Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Austria - but as these European ground squirrels are rare I can't explain where exactly.

Time

The best time to take photos of them is in the morning - though they don't get up that early. Early in the morning they're hungry and the light is better.

Lighting

The light in the morning is a lot easier to control than at noon and I try to photograph with the light. This way you don't get harsh shadows and can even have flares of the blue sky in the background bokeh.

Equipment

For this shot I've used my Canon 5d Mark iii with a Canon 400/2.8 USM ii on a bean bag.

Inspiration

I love these European ground squirrels! I always come back with a smile when I've visited them - even if I didn't get a perfect shot. So I want to transport this feeling and smiling to the viewer and with some knowledge of their behavior and a lot of patience there will come a moment to capture exactly this feeling.

Editing

I don't overdo in post processing. The more experience I have the less I do - I avoid clone stamping, because in major international competitions it is not allowed. So I concentrate on balancing the exposure in Lightroom which is - in good light conditions - no problem, especially because I shoot in RAW mode. After that I use tonal correction and curves in Photoshop to get a natural result, but also increase details a little.

Feedback

In nature photography - especially when doing wild life shots - you need patience, but you need to be on guard to use situations like this for a photo. Practice using your telephoto lenses in fast action situations. Doing a lot of water ski slalom photos in the past helped a lot to take this photo and to don't miss this opportunity. You need to know the autofocus system of your camera very well to get such a shot and you should know that you usually need 1/1000s or shorter shutter times to get such scenes. These guys can be really fast :).
