This photo was taken just a short walk from our hotel in Flam, NorwayTime
This photo always stands out on my computer when looking through my travel photography. We arrived by train late afternoon. After checking into our hotel we wanted to walk around the town because we only had a few hours before the sun started to set. On the path I noticed this boat on the shore with such vivid colors there was no chance I could pass up taking a few photos. I'll never forget Flam, the photo is just a peaceful as the town.Lighting
The light with great with the cloud cover. I knew with such little blue in the sky, I could get the entire boat bright without distracting from the photo too much.Equipment
This was shot with my only camera, a Canon Rebel XS1000D with my 18-55mm lens attached. I didn't bring a tripod so I just used my wrist strap, took a deep breath and snapped the photo.Inspiration
There was not much planning with the photo. We didn't have much time in Flam, so once I saw the boat and the reflection and calm waters, I knew I couldn't pass up taking a photo. As far as I could see there wasn't a ripple in the water.Editing
I process all my images with Lightroom. With this photo the fjords where a little underexposed. I wanted the reflection to almost match the fjord so I increased the exposure a little and brought down the highlights in the sky to show just a little blue without looking overexposed. In my camera bag
My camera is usually in my hand and when in by bag is overflowing because of the size and there is really only 2 spots for lenses. I bring all my lenses: 18-55mm f 3.5 for landscape shots like this one, 55-250mm f4 to capture all those cool things that I have to squint to see, and my 50mm 1.4 for when I'm walking the streets and want some crisp photos. I keep all the normal stuff too, extra battery, lens cleaner and a few extra SD cards.Feedback
Its great when you have time to plan out your shoot but for the on the go photographer its more of a surprise to come across something so amazing and have the opportunity to capture it. I would say enjoy the moment, take a few photos, but move on a explore so you don't miss out on something amazing.
