The Colorado River carves its way through the southern Utah desert landscape near Moab, the La Sal Mountains and Canyonlands National Park. Dead Horse Point got its name when in pioneer days someone drove a herd of horses onto the point to use as a corral, blocked off the exit so they couldn't escape, then never returned for the group. The horses were all found much later dead of dehydration, ironic, as there was an never-ending supply of water just 1000 feet below them.
