This is a cowboy classic. My heroes will always be cowboys. By the way, I was named Tex because my father liked the singing cowboy, Tex Ritter.

Location
This photo was taken at the local Dayboro Rodeo show. I'm an artist and amateur photographer so every photo is a new learning experience for me.Time
This is one of my favourite images taken mid morning, I was fortunate enough to have great lighting due to a semi cloudy day which allowed me to bring out detail in the faces of both man and animal.Lighting
I wanted to subdue the busy background and bring out detail in the subject and was fortunate enough to have optimum lighting at just the right moment.Equipment
I used a Sony a99 Full-Frame camera, Sony G Series Lens 4-5.6 70-400 SSM to capture the moment.Inspiration
I love action shooting, especially the interaction of people and animals and a rodeo provides both with a lot of drama and atmosphere.Editing
I used Lightroom to process the colour of the raw file and then layered in additional background using Photoshop and with a combination of filters brought out the lighting, contrast, highlights and shadows. In my camera bag
I usually carry a Sony a99 body along with two lenses depending on what I'm shooting but usually a Sony 4-5.6 70-400 SSM and Sony 2.8/20 wide angle, Sony HVL-F60M Flash, Nero Trigger, Manual trigger, Wireless remote trigger, Sony HD Camcorder, Samsung Tablet, SD cards, spare batteries for all devices, Cleaning kit, Bug repellent, Swiss army knife, Torch, two light tripods, a 3 leg canvas seat and an Umbrella. (sounds a lot but I do quite a bit of time-lapse photography so actually it's not).Feedback
My best advice for capturing the action in an image like this is to use manual settings, high continuous shooting drive mode f4.5-8 400-800 ISO (Daytime) with a shutter speed at least double the focal length of the lens. Starting the shoot as the gate opens, don't fill the frame more than a two thirds as the action will be fast (usually all over in about 5 seconds) and moving unpredictably, so you will need the space to keep the action within the frame. I also use continuous focus with motion tracking.
