Location
I was in the Sabi Sand in South Africa, a premier area for wildlife viewing. I have traveled to most countries in sub-Saharan Africa and this is one of my favorites.Time
Unfortunately poachers had started a fire to distract the rangers the night before. It had taken them a long time to put it out.We decided to go the next morning to check out the area and the extent of the damage. Of course, the real loss were the animals killed on the other side of the park.Lighting
Beautiful morning light, especially so in Africa....Equipment
Nikon 610, Nikon 80-400, hand heldInspiration
We were surveying the area when to our delight this leopard mother and her young cub appeared. I particularly love this photo because not only are they in step, but his large paw shows what a big boy he will grow up to be.Editing
Some minor work in Lightroom to process the RAW imageIn my camera bag
I never travel without at least two bodies and two lenses. I keep the lenses attached, since with wildlife you never know what could happen and need to be ready in an instant. Now I use the Nikon 750 and 500; 80-400 and 150-600Feedback
Someone once said that a bad photo of something great is better than a great photo of something bad. If you want really great photos, you have to get out there and shoot great stuff. Spend your money on travel and less on gear. There is a big, beautiful world out there.
